NAIDOC Week 2023 - For Our Elders - 104.1 CHYFM and Uncle Richard Widders & Koah
June 2023
104.1 CHYFM is proud to announce our acknowledgement and contribution to National NAIDOC Week 2023.
“With this year’s NAIDOC theme being “For Our Elders”, I couldn’t think of anyone more appropriate to record several inspirational, informational and educational pieces to play on-air during NAIDOC Week than Uncle Richard,” says Station Manager Angie Vaughan. “I heard Uncle Richard speak at a function a few weeks ago and found his wealth of knowledge, culture and connection to country enthralling and inspiring, and I treasured the time I was able to speak with him at the event. I learned so much from that conversation with him.”
“Uncle Richard was very generous with his time and wealth of knowledge and culture to come to the station to record these pieces, and we were also blessed that he brought along his son, Koah, who also contributed.”
The pieces recorded that will be played on 104.1 CHYFM during NAIDOC Week cover the following topics:
· What is a Welcome to Country
· What is an Acknowledgement of Country
· NAIDOC Events in Coffs Harbour
· Gumbaynggir Totems
· The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flags
· What it Means to be Aboriginal
Across every generation, Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families. Elders are cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, nurturers, advocates, teachers, survivors, leaders, hard workers and our loved ones.
“There is so much we can learn from our Elders and in multi-generational families. The handing down of knowledge, family history and stories, recipes and guidance is such important learning we really have to protect, nurture and honour.”
During NAIDOC Week, 104.1 CHYFM will be increasing its playlist of Indigenous artists, highlighting a catalogue of over 3,000 First Nations songs and performances in many indigenous languages as well as English.
